Timing and Planning

As I have mentioned before, I love sunrise and for many reasons. First of all it is quiet most people are not even out of bed yet. Traffic is light which makes fewer obstacles to shoot around. Most of all I love the soft warm morning light. Early in the day, when the sun is positioned closer to the horizon, sunlight passes through a lot more atmospheric interference such as smoke, fog, pollution, dust, ect. than it would at high noon. All of this interference tends to scatter the blue component more than the red resulting in a light shift toward red.

However when planning a early morning project, I must always be aware of the time constraints that mother nature has place on me. I like to plan my projects in advance during the day when the light temperature is less favorable to me, usually after I have captured the images for that morning. I scout out the locations for a future projects and mark the locations on my handy dandy GPS system. Man I gotta tell you, I really don’t know what I did before those little gadgets became available. Well actually I do. I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out the crappy notes I took the day before…Oh well. Anyway I cannot stress enough the importance of careful planning, it really makes a difference

                                                                                                                               Later, Mark

Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L USM Lens Review

by Mark Benjamin on 12/07/10

What an awesome addition to my family of lenses!! I have found this lens to be both rugged, and a perfect do all lens. The wide range of focal lengths have made it possible to almost eliminate the need to change lenses for the varying demands of both landscape and event shots. The Image Stabilization feature is excellent (a major improvement for Canon). The IS feature on this lens is also tripod-sensing. The lens can actually measure the limited amount of vibrations when a tripod is in use which reduces mirror slap as well as tripod vibrations (automatically placing the lens in the secondary IS mode). However this lens it is not perfect (no lens really is). I have notice a slight amount of chromatic aberration (CA) in the 28- 50mm range as well as some moderate vignetting at these focal lengths as well. Both of which are easily corrected during editing. Another problem I have noticed is some barrel distortion at the smaller focal lengths as well as some significant pincushion distortion throughout the entire focal range of this lens. I have read a few negative reviews concerning the tension ring, and the push pull zoom feature resulting in lens creep, I personally have not found this to be a problem. Yes the lens is heavy!! Get over it!! It’s a Canon L series and it’s built like a tank what did you expect. To sum things up I am very satisfied overall with the performance of this lens. It lives up to the high standards of the Canon L series family of lenses that I have come to expect over the years.

Landscape and Event Photographer

Although landscape photography remains my main photographic interest as well as maintaining a , nature and landscape photography gallery, I feel that as a photographer I have to stay active in as many photography ventures as possible! Wedding photography can be a vey challenging as well as portrait photography. With these you are trying to maintain a balance between the art and the needs and expectations of the client. Needless to say I have to constantly remind myself to maintain the balance between event photography and landscape photography in order to keep my shills honed sharp as possible.

Yes We Do Wedding Photography!!

Wedding photography, in my opinion can be the most challenging of all!! That is why I employ a photojournalistic approach. Every wedding I have ever photographed has had its own theme. Whether it is a theme requested by the bride & groom, or one that just spontaneously developed during the rehearsal, ceremony, and reception. It is the responsibility of the wedding photographer to detect and incorporate these themes in a way that tells a story that will never be forgotten.
